Swaziland

The British guaranteed autonomy for the Swazis of southern Africa in the late 19th century; independence was granted in 1968. Student and labor unrest during the 1990s pressured the monarchy (one of the oldest on the continent) to allow political reform and greater democracy. Swaziland recently surpassed Botswana as the country with the world's highest known rates of HIV/AIDS infection.

Location:

Hope for Africa Mission site is located at Hho-hho village in the district of Hlathikhulu about 50 km from Nhlangano town. The size of the mission camp is 300 by 150 meters with tents serving as temporary fellowship accommodation.

The work started in 2002, through Dumisani Shongwe a missionary who came into contact with the mission, when Didasko School of mission visited our camp in 2000; he was then part of the team of trainees who were training with Didasko. After completing his mission training he joined HfA, and was sent him back to his community in Swaziland where he originally came from before joining Didasko. We moved in with food supply and started some food-for-work projects, which was aimed at relieving the community and enhancing their agricultural productivity.

The local authorities gave us the land and, we pitched a tent and started our activities on that piece of land; later we started to collect stone for the building of the church structure, which was going to serve also as community centre. This we are doing by using the same method of food-for-work program. This region has got its own regional mission board and coordinator reporting directly to the international board of Hope for Africa Mission and to the Mission Director.

Projects completed
  • The food relieve project comes and goes according to need of the community, like in any other Southern African Region.
  • With land purchased from the authorities, a group of young people both from United Kingdom and South Africa came together and gathered some tones from the nearby mountain for the building of the ‘community centre’.
Projects in progress
  • Food relief programs continue according to the need of that time.
  • Church planting, church branches coordination is an on going process.
  • The mission site development is continuing; we are busy looking at things like church building, toilets, fencing around the camp, borehole drilling and proper sanitation.
  • Peasant farming program, farming skills development, leadership training and development including bible lessons.
Projects Planned
  • We are planning to enhance our leadership training, some agricultural skills development training, improve food security by developing some gravitation irrigation channels through food-for-work programs.
